As I Please is the blog site I use to write about issues that arise while working as a photographer, to highlight new projects, and to give background information to complement the work displayed in this archive. It can be accessed directly from the tab in the menu bar above.

COMMISSIONING NEW PHOTOGRAPHY

The Magnum photographer Marc Riboud once said, looking back on his long and illustrious career, that he would happily do it all again with no film in his camera.

I have been to places I would never have visited, and met people I would never had the privilege to engage with, had I not had a camera in my bag and a story to tell. Some have been far from home - banana farmers in the Eastern Caribbean, migrant cane-cutters in the Dominican Republic, health workers in Gaza - but mostly they have been much closer, often on my own doorstep. The camera has taken me from ministerial offices in Whitehall to community action in Paddington and ex-mining villages in South Yorkshire; from a portrait session with a chief executive in the West End to backstage at the English National Opera, or a refugee reception centre in Dover.

Dealing with this variety has led me to an adaptable reportage style inspired by the great documentary photographers of the last century, and assisted by the technological advances of this one.

My approach very much depends on an understanding of the context in which I am operating, respect for those whom I am photographing, and on working methods that cause the least possible disruption to the situation at hand.

I can travel light, even when additional lighting is required, and have developed a streamlined digital workflow which enables me to deliver high quality images fast. Clients can view digital contact sheets from commissioned assignments on password-protected areas of this site. High resolution files can be downloaded directly, or sent on CD, by email or FTP.

PUBLICATIONS

It's surprising how seldom an editorial photo sits on the printed page in a way that also makes an impact as a thumbnail image on a computer screen. Here, selected from the many pages on which my photos appear each year, are some of those that do.

BOOK: COMMUNITY ACTION IN PADDINGTON

North Paddington 1975-2008 - Images by Philip Wolmuth

That was Then, This is Now, Community Action in North Paddington 1975-2008 charts how collective action by the area's residents has helped transform an impoverished corner of the City of Westminster, one of the wealthiest boroughs in the country, and how the nature of community action has been shaped by the changing political environment over the last 40 years.
