In early 2018 Speakers' Corner took on a new lease of life, not all of it healthy. The 'home of free speech' became an arena for weekly gladiatorial contests between Islamophobic English nationalists and a fluid group of Muslim men, as eager to defend their religion as their opponents were to insult it. By the start of 2019 the nationalists had largely lost interest, and the arguments reverted to the Christian v Muslim squabbles that have been the norm since the 1990s.
